Question 1

What is the first thing I should do if my Brisbane business is hacked?

Accepted Answer

Isolate any device you believe has been compromised by disconnecting it from your network. Do not turn it off. Then call your managed IT provider or a cybersecurity incident response specialist immediately. Change passwords on all critical accounts from a clean, unaffected device while you wait for your IT provider to respond.

Question 2

Do I have to report a cyberattack to the Australian government?

Accepted Answer

If personal information held by your business has been accessed or exposed in a way that is likely to result in serious harm, you are required to notify the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and affected individuals under the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme. The Cyber Security Act 2024 also introduced mandatory reporting obligations for ransomware payments for businesses above certain turnover thresholds. Getting legal advice early in the cyberattack response process helps you work out which obligations apply to your specific situation.

Question 3

Should I pay the ransom if my Brisbane business is hit by ransomware?

Accepted Answer

Do not pay before taking professional advice. Payment does not guarantee recovery of your data, does not prevent the attacker from striking again, and may trigger additional legal obligations. An experienced cybersecurity specialist can assess whether your data is recoverable from backups or through other means before you make any decision about payment.

Question 4

How long does it take a Brisbane business to recover from a cyberattack?

Accepted Answer

Recovery time depends heavily on the backup and recovery infrastructure in place before the attack, the scope of the compromise, and how quickly the incident was contained. Businesses with current tested backups and a managed IT provider who can respond immediately typically recover within days. Businesses without tested backups or a cyberattack response plan in place can face weeks of disruption and may never fully recover some data.

Question 5

How much does a cyberattack cost a small Brisbane business?

Accepted Answer

The direct costs include IT remediation, data recovery, legal advice, regulatory notifications, and potential fines. The indirect costs include lost productivity, reputational damage, and lost clients. The Australian Cyber Security Centre has reported that the average cost of a cybercrime incident for a small business in Australia is over $46,000, and that figure does not include the longer-term reputational and client retention costs that are harder to quantify.

Question 6

How do I know if my Brisbane business data has been stolen in a cyberattack?

Accepted Answer

A forensic assessment of affected devices and systems by your IT provider or a cybersecurity specialist is the most reliable way to determine what data was accessed or exfiltrated during an attack. Network logs, email logs, and cloud platform audit trails all contribute to this assessment. This is why preserving evidence before beginning recovery is so important.

Question 7

What is an incident response plan and does my Brisbane business need one?

Accepted Answer

An incident response plan is a documented set of steps your business follows when a cyberattack or data breach occurs. It covers who to call, what to do first, how to communicate with clients, and where your backups are. Every Brisbane business that holds client data or relies on IT systems to operate needs one. It does not need to be complex. It needs to be written down, known by the right people, and reviewed at least annually.
